HIV-1 viral load is determined with tests using advanced technologies that are extremely sensitive for measuring the amount of HIV genetic material present in their blood. A reliable and sensitive viral load test should consistently detect and measure viral load levels down to 50 copies/ml, have a high specificity (i.e. positive only when the virus is present) and provide reproducible results from one test to the next.
